The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Bridging Program is specifically designed for prospective international students who want to attend university in the United States but lack the necessary English language skills required for regular admission to the university. The Bridging Program provides a pathway for admission to international students who do not meet the minimum TOEFL or IELTS requirements, as well as for students who have not taken the TOEFL or IELTS, and, therefore, do not have any English proficiency test scores to submit.

Minimum English proficiency scores for regular undergraduate admission to NMSU are:

  • TOEFL scores above 520 paper-based or 68 internet-based
  • IELTS scores above a 6.0
  • Pearson Test of English scores above 51

Process for International Undergraduate Students

Prospective International Undergraduate Students who want to participate in the NMSU Bridging Program are conditionally admitted to NMSU and attend intensive English courses through NMSU’s Center for English Language Programs (CELP). Once the intensive English program (IEP) is completed, a TOEFL/IELTS waiver will be issued to the student by CELP that satisfies the English language requirement for regular admission.  At this point, a student’s admission status is changed from conditional to regular and the student’s I-20 will be changed from IEP to the undergraduate program chosen by the student. Next, students begin regular academic courses at NMSU’s Main Campus or participate in the 2+2 or 1+3 Smart Pathway Program with Doña Ana Community College (one of NMSU’s two-year campuses located in Las Cruces).

1. International undergraduate students with <TOEFL 520 paper-based/68 internet-based or < 6.0 on the IELTS is conditionally admitted to NMSU
2. Student participates in the Intensive English Program (IEP) through NMSU’s Center for English Language Programs until the final level (105) is completed
3. Student is issued a TOEFL/IELTS waiver that satisfies the English language requirement for regular admission to NMSU
4. Student’s admission status is changed from conditional to regular and the I-20 is changed from IEP to his/her undergraduate study
5. Student begins academic program at NMSU Main Campus or participates in the 2+2 or 1+3 at Doña Ana Community College

CELP’s Intensive English Program (IEP)

Many international students choose to participate in CELP’s Intensive English Program (IEP). The IEP consists of five (5) levels with each level lasting eight (8) weeks. Students take an English Placement Test upon arrival to CELP to determine which level is most appropriate in which to begin study. Upon successful completion of level 105, students matriculate to NMSU for undergraduate or graduate studies by receiving a TOEFL or IELTS waiver exclusively for NMSU.

2+2 or 1+3 Smart Pathway Programs

Doña Ana Community College (DACC), a branch campus of NMSU located in Las Cruces, and New Mexico State University (NMSU) have partnered to produce several DACC Associate degrees that transfer seamlessly into specific Bachelor’s degrees at NMSU. We call these Pathway Programs because, with good planning, students can earn the Associates degree in two years and finish the Bachelor’s in another two years—hence the term 2+2 Pathway Program! Our 1+3 Pathway Program is ideal for students who want to transfer only their first year (30 credit hours) from DACC to NMSU.

With good planning, all of the credits earned in the DACC programs in the left-hand column will apply toward the NMSU Bachelor’s degrees in the right-hand column:
